Five things a website needs so customers trust you and book

By , Novi Digital  ·   ·  4 min read

When someone finds your business online, they decide in a few seconds whether to keep reading, ring you or leave. A website doesn't need to be flashy to earn trust, but it does need a handful of basics. Here are five.

1. It says clearly what you do and where

A visitor should know within a few seconds what you offer and the area you serve. Put it in the main heading and the first paragraph, in plain words. "Plumbing and gas fitting on the Gold Coast" beats a clever slogan.

It also helps people finding you through search. Use the same wording customers use, and mention your suburb or region where it's true.

2. It works well on a phone

Many people look up local businesses on their mobile, often while they're out or in a hurry. Check your site on your own phone:

If the answer to any of these is no, you're probably losing enquiries.

3. Contact details and next steps are easy to find

Put your phone number, email and a clear "get a quote" or "book" button where people will look for them, usually at the top and the bottom of every page. Show your service area and hours, and a map if customers visit you.

The fewer steps between "I'm interested" and "I've contacted them", the more enquiries you'll get. Keep forms short: a name, a way to reach them and what they need.

4. It shows real proof

People trust evidence more than claims. Use what's real:

Never invent testimonials, statistics or logos. If you don't have reviews yet, leave that section out until you do, and ask happy customers for one. A short, honest page beats an impressive-looking one that visitors can't believe.

5. It's secure, current and looked after

A site that shows a security warning, lists last year's prices or has broken links makes visitors wonder whether the business is still operating. Basics to keep on top of:

This is the part most owners don't have time for, which is why it's often better handled by someone else.

Common mistakes to avoid

A quick self-check

Ask a friend who doesn't know your business to open your website on their phone and tell you three things: what you do, where you do it and how they'd contact you. If they can't answer in about ten seconds, that's the first thing to fix.
